It's been almost a YEAR since I did one of these posts! And now that I have an even better camera phone it's time I started posting them again. So here goes...In reverse order from today to January 5th when I got my new phone.

02.14.11 ~ This FAKE cig was dropped on my porch from our party Saturday and I found it when I picked up this announcement on my door! Great! lol 02.14.11 ~ Ryan's Grandpa is AMAZING at sending cards for every occasion. He always chooses something thoughtful and they ALWAYS arrive on time! When I showed this to Dylan he said, very dramatically, "oh wow!" When I handed it to him he hugged it and said "I love mickey mouse". Adorable! Thanks Grandpa.

02.10.11 ~ I DESPISE doing anything with the cars! But Ryan nagged me enough to check my oil level, this is the pic I sent he and Mike (hoping someone would respond quickly!) to see if I needed to add any.

02.03.11 ~ I...errr...I mean DYLAN loves forts!! My living room frequently looks like this and honestly I think it's so much fun. I guess I never outgrew my fort building stage.

02.02.11 ~ On my way to get about SIX INCHES cut off of my hair!

02.01.11 ~ My Dilly has had ear infections this month! I think (hope!) they are finally gone, he didn't complain about them until they had been around for "awhile" so it took some strong antibiotics to finally work. The scale pics are not nearly as cute as when he would sit on the small scale in his diaper, in fact he was jumping around so much I couldn't get a clear shot. His favorite part of the dr. is, of course, the suckers, and he really just sucks them. I finally threw this one away after he went to bed, it was a tiny nub left on the counter. Who is that patient with a sucker? It was only a small dum-dum to begin with!

Still at the dr. He had these other two boys running in circles after him in the waiting room, they were all laughing so hard! You can see why I didn't have any clue he was sick.

01.30.11 ~ My poor mom was sick and in the hospital for a few days. (Doing better now thank goodness!) Anna and I were there for a long time the first day and ended up in state of silly delirium. The second pic is of our name tags, mine was a disaster and kept falling off, I even found it on Anna's back once - WTH? Her's never moved and was in perfect condition. We were laughing so hard about this...I know, had to be there!

01.19.11 ~ Ryan had just built Dylan a VERY impressive book tower. I am not kidding, it was huge! Of course it fell, and so did the tears, right as I took this picture.

I especially love this because it doesn't look like he likes them at all but he keeps eating and saying they are nummy!

It takes him about 30 seconds to get going from the beginning again...My favorite part is "like a diamond in the sky". Sometimes he substitutes diamond (a shape to him, not a gem) with circle, rectangle, etc. It was great to see him first have this thought - "why is a star like a diamond? they are different shapes!". I had never even considered this seeming contradiction before!

I consistently hear the 'debates' as to why one blogs so I'm putting it out there, taking out the mystery, you will wonder no longer! About me anyway...

Simply put, I blog for me. That's it. I enjoy it, it makes me happy, it's rewarding. On many levels it makes me think. It forces me to always see the best in life, to find joy and excitement in the little things and most importantly to have them documented. I'm even making a book http://www.blurb.com/ - thanks Lisa! Without my blog I would not have a journal. I would lose the vast majority of little moments that make up life, I am so glad there is a medium that keeps me interested and consistent.

A common criticism is that many bloggers are unrealistic, they paint a pretty picture of life that is not reality. Well who wants the nitty gritty in peoples lives? I know, dumb question there is a reason people love reality television where the characters are miserable, being objectified or are simply in a bigger mess than the viewer. There is also a reason why that type of entertainment is not for me. Instead I prefer a more positive outlook on life, not that I'm always very good at it... Not only that but when I blog about the happy events and moments in my life it actually makes me happier! I am forced to reflect on different aspects of my life from a positive perspective, that's really all it is anyway, perspective.

My overall thought about the whole situation is who cares? If you enjoy reading my blog by all means read it, if you don't so be it, I am in no way offended. For those of you who are concerned by the judginess {fake word} of readers don't let it be discouraging. Really. It's your blog, it's your life and YOU get to look at it however you want! Put yourself out there emotionally, or don't. Talk about the events of your life in a positive light, or don't. Blog weekly, monthly or annually. But be true to yourself, you're in no way accountable to anyone else just because you are willing to share. But keep sharing (if you want) because I love it!

I don't know how this boy gets more clever each day but he does!

His latest occupations...

.: home building :.

Out of anything! This day it was books. He was so committed that he fell asleep with a roof on his head. Of course we took it off while he was sleeping not at all expecting him to wake up asking "where the roof go?". I refrained from telling him it was on fire (you're singing it now too aren't you?).

.: robot repair :.
He finds a screwdriver (real or toy) to repair all the robots in the house which include Mama Robot, Daddy Robot, Dylan Robot, Capri Robot and a variety of inanimate robots. He takes this job very seriously and if he needs help he will find another tool for others to participate. He is picking up on the "bleep blop blorp" language very well and I am confident his skills will be critical to our inevitable droid dependent future.

He is all about riding in luxury and comfort.

He used to make trains out of EVERYTHING but now it's the tracks. He lines up pillows, studiously gathering them from all over the house to create a track. Straws, blocks and snacks are among his other favorite resources.

First thing each day all of the blocks get dumped out, then we build. He has very specific requests but fortunately that is coupled with an even better imagination. My ability to build a house, airplane, doggie or car out of mega blocks is nothing to brag about but that's one of the greatest things about being mom - he thinks they are "wow cool"!

He is finally getting into drawing, cutting, coloring and painting. I have been looking forward to this his entire 29 month life! Now we get out the crayons, colored pencils, paint and/or play dough almost every day and he makes works of art.

Dylan really got into Ryan's birthday last week. He is still telling him happy birthday every day. The day of his birthday Dylan was INSISTENT that it was also my birthday and when I corrected him he would argue vehemently. I loved it! Even today I was on a work call and Dylan came over and said "Hi daddy" and started singing Happy Birthday into the phone. Luckily the guy I was talking to also has a toddler and thought it was pretty funny!

On the big day we decorated with "alloons", the banner Dylan chose and the card he made. Then we made numma french toast.

I had planned a surprise dinner with Ryan's family but of course it didn't work out as a surprise! Ryan was starving and I ran out of excuses as to why he should wait until 7 to eat...Thanks everyone for coming and keeping it on the down low.
Thank goodness Grandpa took pictures because I wasn't very good about that this week! Of course they are all of Dylan, we all saw enough of Ryan in this post - or did we???

Everyone was so thoughtful with gifts! We got him a new belt buckle and watch, his mom and dad got him a beautiful copy of Farewell to Arms, Kristi got him the running stuff mentioned before and Mike got him some of his favorite shows and a very funny card.

Saturday the celebrations continued with my family at SDRC and dinner at Texas Roadhouse. It was so much fun and really yummy! Again spoiled he got one of his favorite films Orange County, an Apple gift card and the book "Roanoke" which is right up his alley.

My mom took Dylan home while we went to Guster that night.

I know you are thinking "I'm exhausted already!" but that's not all, not even close!

Here comes the tasty icing...

Sunday we had dinner at Madsens. It was so much fun, I have serious withdrawals without you guys, it's not pretty! We did our Christmas and Ashlii and Ryan's birthdays, watched the Golden Globes and played this awesome new game they got us called Dixit - check it out! It's hard (for some of us!) but really unique and fun.

Sophie and Rubie have a special place in my heart, Ryan and I both love these girls! And every time I see them I love them even more. Especially with Dylan. Sophie is so good at playing with these little ones and Rubie and Dylan are absolutely in love, as god intended. They were hugging and holding hands all night without us directing them at all. Granted we betrothed them in utero but since then they have made this choice all on their own.

Thanks to all for the fantastically legendary week! I love that I get all the benefits of Ryan's big day too.

If Ryan had any thought of slacking off with his running his "support" group is making sure that doesn't happen!

It started at Christmas when my mom gave him a large supply of gels to keep him fueled, then Kristi gave him high tech running socks and sport beans for this birthday all to be topped off with this incredible basket from the Madsens. Really? You're all so generous.
You better not let them down Ry, Boston 2012??

Kudos to Cole for the clever contents of the running basket and HUGE thanks to you both for the shoes. He was out in the cold breaking them in last night and raved about them and his happy feet the rest of the evening.

Contents: Men's Health and Fitness magazines, "Where Men Win Glory" by John Krakauer, Clif Bars, 5 Hour Energy, Forrest Gump and ...wait for it... the perfect fanny pack, Ryan wears it even when he isn't running ;-)

The perfect evening...

I had the perfect evening planned Tuesday; Sams Club, spin class and a swim. Perfection, right?? Well Ryan threw that plan right out the window! He got home about 5pm and decided we should go see Dashboard Confessional in concert. What? Spontaneous and random and SO not typical Ryan so I was all over this rare opportunity!

Of course this isn't as easy as it used to be since we have Dylan logistics but thank goodness my mom is always willing to drop what she is doing to watch him - seriously we are so lucky!! And so is Dyl he already had a fun day in the snow with Grandma T. and now he was going to play with Anna and Grandma H. --> this plan was working out great for all!!

So we sped to Murray to drop off Dyl and sped back downtown for the concert. We got there at about 6:45 to see some lame guy with even lamer hair play solo. After him was Lady Danville who were pretty good, quite clever and very entertaining.

DEDICATED: ASHLII

Next was Chris Conley from Saves the Day. A little band Cole & Ashlii introduced us to at the Crazy Donkey in NYC a few years back and one of Ashlii's favorites so this is for her...

Remember when Andy rocked it with Ben? These guys attempted to rock it with Chris when the audience requested Shoulder To the Wheel and he couldn't play it with out "the band".

Not bad but not Andy...and truthfully pretty bad! :D

Gotta love the annoying guy next to us who kept raising his bottle in front of me and spilling on everyone!

And last Chris Carrabba from Dashboard Confessional. I gotta say we were a bit disappointed in his attire but then again, he's old (older than us even)! My favorite thing he said when he was explaining a song "I was sitting in my bedroom, oh no wait, I was a grown up so I had a living room at this point."

Still he should have looked like this and not be shopping at Eddie Bauer for gigs!

We didn't take many pics - this is the best one we got!

We had tons-o-fun even though the concert itself was "underwhelming" (Ryan's word) and it defnitely beat the evenings original plans!

A Happy Birthday for ALL!

I think Krissy put it best the other day when she was talking about how old we are --> "we are in our thirties not just 30 anymore!" But old is all about perspective and if we don't keep each other young then Dyl will do it for us.

I KNOW Ryan is going to absolutely KILL me for posting this but here we go...Enjoy it while it lasts I forsee a post removal request coming but for now you're welcome!

Dylan loves to do anything and everything daddy does! His favorites are shaving, fixing things ("fik dat"), push ups and lifting weights (we have a 2 lb weight, and it's "heaby"). He usually starts out alongside Ryan doing pushups but as you can see ends up on top, adding a solid 27 pounds to the workout for Ry. The proof shows that Dyl's 'help' is worthwhile and for that we thank you! (*wink-wink*)

Ryan: Is this what you meant when you said you can do whatever you want because this video is going in the vault?? (1:15)

Dylan had his first swim lessons today!

We go to the pool a few times a week so he's pretty comfortable in the water, unfortunately because we do go here so often he wanted to do what we always do PLAY! The class was actually exhausting for me (it's a mom & tot class) because he was fighting me on everything. He is great at kicking and moving his arms on his tummy but try to lay him on his back and it's like I am torturing him, it's the end of the world for this kid! So after the constant struggle for 45 minutes I was relieved when class was over and he could just play.

Hopefully next week it goes a bit better!

We were supposed to go to Lovell for Christmas this year to visit Ryan's grandparents but it didn't work out! So instead we had a pretty chill holiday at home.

Christmas Eve we went to Ryan's parents for Toy Story 3.
Dylan loves it and held Woody the whole time.

Dylan still doesn't quite understand how the whole Santa visit works, which we are enjoying for now... He slept until 10AM!

We always do Santa at our house with just the three of us before going to Ryan's parents for presents and breakfast.

Ryan's dad is so good at keeping Christmas Day exciting with a bunch of adults! In the past he has created riddles, used music for clues, etc. and if you don't guess (supposedly!) you don't get your gift. This year we each had ten clues to reach our present...

Each year we have a Christmas party with our friends and this year we decided to simplify. We went out to eat, no kidlets and in my opinion it was fantastic! More time to chat and relax.

NYE - The Final Countdown

NYE was pretty near perfect! My mom very generously took Dyl for the night so we could go out on the town!

I don't know why I always take these pics of us driving, maybe in case I don't get anymore and they usually turn out pretty good!

First we went to Iggys' downtown for dinner (hence the near perfect and not actual perfection!) and then we went to TRON. I know I have claimed nerd before but I have a feeling my next confession will confirm my place in nerd-dom I LOVED THIS MOVIE! Seriously, it was fantastic! Even now I am trying to think of a reason that is not nerdy, like Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were really hot, or Jeff Bridges performed beyond expectation...but lets be honest, I just liked it because of the total techy nerdness. I feel like understanding how lame this guy is makes me a bit less nerdy but whatever, I can't deny my true self.

After the Tron documentary we went to our hotel to thaw out a bit before heading to the Eve finale! We stayed at the Gateway Hyatt which is absolutely fantastic.

And who couldn't have the time of their life with these two?!? Serious fun right??
Yup, I've replaced by the iPad!

We went to Eve at 11PM and checked out all the crazy happenings that had been going on for three days.

Then we grabbed some hot drinks and watched the fireworks before embarrassing my sister in front of her friends.
Seriously, look at my face! Supa embarrassing!

I redeemed myself with the Ice Eskimo pose.

Fortunately on the way back we were inside the Salt Palace and could walk clear to the Delta Center (call me old school) without having to face the absolutely frigid 4 degree weather until the very last moment possible. Asleep by 1:30, we are pretty much rock stars!

Christmas Numero Uno

A few years ago we started the tradition of celebrating Christmas with my family the Sunday before the actual holiday. Genius! It removes the pressure of a single day where you need to see everyone and be everywhere, we love it. We do dinner and gifts and really get to enjoy the time without having to run to the next house or feel guilty that we aren't doing it all. Genius!

This year Curtis and Brittany were our fantastic hosts! They made a delicious meal, I mean DELICIOUS chicken fricasse. And had quite the spread of snacks and treats. After absolutely stuffing ourselves we opened presents, lots of presents! My mom went a little crazy this year but we aren't complaining.

I love this shot. It started as a totally random moment but I made Ryan re-do for a picture, then the camera wouldn't focus so it took a long time and got pretty awkward!

Dylan fell asleep on the way there so he slept through dinner and you can see in the first few pics that he was a bit cranky from just waking up. Also, he insisted on wearing the tie - so cute!

As part of his crankiness he did not like the sound and feel of ripping the wrapping paper.

Anna has been dying for an excuse to get Dylan this ladybug.
It's adorable and he loves it!

The bubble choo choo train has been on pretty much non-stop since Dylan got it Sunday. If you have been to my house you can attest to this, NON-STOP!

I also love his efforts to play with everything at once! In the sled from grandma, playing with the train from grandma and wearing monkey from Curtis & Brittany. At one point the ladybug was in there too but it was collecting too much soap.

Trees, Rinks, Dickens & Gingerbread

We went to the Festival of Trees with my mom and sister a few weeks ago. Dylan wanted to play with all the trees that had toys! He also loved watching the hip-hop dancers, he was totally rockin' with them. I'm telling you he can't sit still when there is a beat! He also ate SIX of these gingerbread men along with Hershey kisses, he's been on a sugar high most of this month. He had fun painting a gingerbread man and making a stained glass ornament too.

The Dickens Festival was fun too! Dylan fell asleep in the car and actually made it through transition to the stroller so he slept for the first hour, it was fantastic! Once he woke up he was on the go. Grandpa was looking at this amazing "playhouse" that Dylan of course fell in love with, well to be honest we all did! We also played in this synthetic snow stuff, it was really weird.

My mom gave us this rink that we had given her 14 years ago and Dylan absolutely loves it! Anna was about his age when we got it and I remember her nicely sitting and watching the pretty ice skaters and listening to the carols. Dylan sees this as an entirely different game and he is not content with simply observing. He loves to take it apart put everything back together, knock down all the skaters in one fell swoop often using the Christmas tree, put his cars on the ice, run over the skaters - basically there is the grand addition of crashing and exploding sounds to this once serene piece. Boys are so awesome!

I was totally a slacker with the Christmas decor this year, it didn't get up until last week. But totally worth the wait. Dylan loves his own little tree and for a few days wanted to hang anything on it that had a string, for example his boots. So funny! I can't tell you how many times I heard "hang on dare?".

I ventured into uncharted territory this year by making homemade gingerbread and it was not a simple task, especially with the "help" of a two year old! But it turned out to be a lot of fun, Dylan loved decorating the house, tree and cookies and it was actually quite tasty. However next year Ryan will not be in charge of buying the candy decor, M&M's and Mike & Ikes - that's it! What? No gumdrops, licorice ropes, red hots, mints, etc. etc....But the end result is still pretty impressive.

This kid is hilarious - I am not exaggerating even a little bit!

The many faces in these pics don't even begin to portray his personality!

It's amazing to me how seemingly overnight he has started speaking in full sentences, and not just repeating what we say (although he does a lot of that too!) but actually taking what we say and forming his own sentence. Some of my favorite things are "hinga" (finger), "put on dere" (put it on there), "I dun lika" (I don't like it), "heno"(hello, he answers the phone heno mama), "kissmas" (Christmas), "hlease" (please), he says all of his shapes, numbers and colors so cute, "watch a show", "sicka" (sticker), "my turn" or "din turn" (Dylan's turn), "goo clues" (Blues Clues), "fassa" (faster), "bizzy" (Dizzy, he is always bizzy when he dances), "koo koo hlock" (Cuckoo clock, in reference to any clock), grunting when he flexes his muscles, "gabba gabba" (Yo Gabba Gabba, loves that show), "watch me", "kayzee" (crazy, he loves us to drive crazy), "reay set go" (when he wants you to go do something for him), "ball ceral" (kix), "apple ceral" (apple jacks), "canna" (camera), "sawich" (sandwich), "pack pack" (backpack), "ouside" (outside), "what doing?" (what are you doing), "i luh you" (I love you) "gimmie dat" (give me that), "I wanna" (I want it), "fwing" (swing) "Din" (Dylan, he references himself in the third person).

I dun lika is one of my favorites and most often heard, for example when I am trying to find out what he wants to eat it goes like this...
Me: Dylan do you want chicken for lunch?
Dylan: No mama, I dun lika chicken
Me: Ok do you want a sandwich?
Dylan: No, I dun lika sawich.
Me: What about a quesadilla?
Dylan: No, I dun lika quasadilla.
Me: Do you want cheese?
Dylan: No mama, I dun lika cheese.

I make him chicken.

My other favorite is "what doing?"
Dylan: What doing mama?
Me: Working on my computer, what are you doing?

ELEVEN years ago today we were just two young kiddos tying the knot and look at us now!

We used to joke that we would shoot for five years, then ten, now that we have happily reached eleven and have this little guy I think we have officially accepted it's forever {yikes}

Ryan was watching this video on Ashlii's blog which has a portion of the following quote and he could relate, so yes I am writing something from him to me but I know he means it.

The second nicest thing he said to me this year was about this post. He read it and said that it was very good, I am a great writer, good enough that I "could be a columnist, back when people read columns, like a really good columnist in the 90s".

So sweet, single tear.

Yup, we are full of romance around here and I just wanted to share a glimpse of how I am the lucky recipient of so much love.

But really, I am!

And maybe I am not much for sappy, mooshy, loviedovieness either but I truly appreciate that you are my husband Ryree! I know that you and I are the perfect match. No matter what we go through it always amazes me how we make it work. I credit so much of that to your persistent (sometimes annoyingly) communication, you have made me a better person in that respect. Thank you for loving me for who I am but always supporting me in pushing myself further. Amidst the last few months of change I am so lucky you were the one by my side, keeping it real, that is something I can always expect from you and it provides stability for myself and our family.

Things may not always be perfect but they are real;

I know it's a bit early to post what I have learned this year but I have reached my capacity in both heart and mind. I am making the conscious decision to not learn anything else for the remaining 17 days - I'm out!

* I have no problem bribing Dylan, that's just the kind of mom I am! Especially if I want him to eat. No guilt here!

* It's ok to open myself up a bit. I'm not made of stone so why do I act like it? I think this change has been evident in some of my blog posts. It makes me happy.

* I really am not made of stone! I do get hurt, I feel disappointment and pain. I have accepted that this doesn't make me weak, it makes me real. I try not to deny my feelings anymore.

* Being more open is a risk, it can be a big one, I am more susceptible to pain but it's a risk worth taking - that's the real lesson, it's worth it!

* I am too materialistic, I always have been and in the end things are just things. They provide no substance, no stability and in fact can be just the opposite. I'm not saying that selling my home and car weren't hard but I'm learning a lot from some of my more irresponsible decisions. I just hope I don't forget, why do we forget what we have already learned, often the hard way, so easily!?

* I absolutely love being a mom! I wasn't always confident that this would be the case but I do, love it, to pieces.

* It's ok to make selfish decisions. To look out for me and my family even if it's not the popular choice or doesn't make everyone happy.

* Dark wood floors do not pair well with light haired pups!

* Back in 1922 anti-Mormonism was all the rage in Britain - in a theatrical and funny way! Original movie info and remake trailer.

* I know more stories about Utah History than anyone reading this, but still only half as many as Ryan.

* Despite all my professed emotions I am incredibly grounded and rational, most of the time this is a good thing but sometimes not so much.

* I love swimming. Love, love, love it! Not just hanging out at the pool but working hard, swimming miles. It's not only my favorite cardio but it clears my head too.

* Next year my resolutions will be more substantial, not just goals for personal accomplishment.

* Posting things like this makes me feel vulnerable, but that is real too.

Soggy Dog Christmas

Way back on December 4th (time is flying!) we kicked off the holiday season at the SOGgy-Dohg Christmas party! SOG is Shades of Gray and Dohg for Pladdohg, you know the bands I always post gigs for? Pladdohg is Ryan's aunt and uncles band that used to practice in our basement, not everyone can say they had a celtic rock band in their basement, good times! Anyway...Joey (drummer) & Joy (fiddler) hosted at their home in Eden. Joy made AMAZING Filipino food and we danced, like really danced, to live music no less! Aside from being the fiddler Joy is also one of our choreographers for Jaks so you know she took this seriously. We first learned the swing (although it is important to note that Ryan took 2nd place in the swing contest of 5th grade so he needed no teaching there!) and then the waltz, which was actually quite difficult! But so much fun.

Definitely not your every day party and most certainly a fantastic way to start the holidays!

Ryan hates it when people say "Happy Turkey Day"

Especially because to him it is all about the PIE!

Usually I make homemade rolls and Ruth's Chris sweet potatoes but this year I wanted to try something new. So because the PIE is the most important part to Ryan I decided to give it a go! Florence was very happy (thank you!) to help me that morning by teaching me her secrets to homemade crust and sharing her delicious apple and peach fillings.

She and Dylan cut out the crust accents, because of course making it pretty is essential!

A lesson in Pie Etiquette

I didn't eat much pie and on Friday wanted to at least try these two, so I cut a sliver (straight across) off the pumpkin and ate the corner of the apple.
TWO MAJOR PIE FAUX PAS or so I learned.

Ryan was shocked and appalled. Seriously, I got in big trouble! Neither approach followed the proper way of cutting a pie. Even though Ryan will eat AN ENTIRE pie WITHOUT a plate in RECORD TIME he eats it in the appropriate slice shape and size, no "going at it like some kind of animal!"

...lesson learned...

Three Little Monkeys is a fun, local toy store where Dylan can (and does) spend hours! They are so good about letting the kids play, even when we don't buy stuff...I feel no guilt, we more than make up for it when we do make our purchases!

They also host Story Time once a week where they sing songs, read a few books and do a craft.

We went once in October but being new to this type of setting you can see Dyl was not quite sure how to act. While the other kids sit and listen to the story he is constantly walking around, moving seats, talking to EVERYONE and walking up to the lady reading the book to point at the pictures saying "look" - she is so good at keeping him involved without letting him be too disruptive!

I love this one, he looks so awkward standing up there!

Most of you know it’s not at all difficult to get me going on philosophy, religion, the purpose of life, afterlife, etc. in a face to face conversation but it’s not something I typically write about. I think part of the reason is that I don’t necessarily want to defend my positions, you can punch holes in them all day even I do that, but that’s not the point. I don’t have an argument or reasoning for everything but it is how I feel, some of life’s principles I firmly believe in regardless of my ability to back them up.

I have been thinking about people, our lifestyles how we interact [and don’t] a lot lately, perhaps because I have been traveling giving me more than enough time to observe. One thing I have noticed and that I find bothersome is the “view” one has in nearly any public place. It’s a sea of head tops. I never thought I would say this but I miss seeing faces, even the ugly ones! Don’t get me wrong I am equally guilty of walking through the airport, sitting at a restaurant, etc. staring down at my phone texting, reading, emailing and so on, but a couple of months ago I decided to change my actions. I now put my phone away, take my headphones off and attempt a small interchange with strangers even if it’s just a smile, knowing full well that I am at risk of being roped into a conversation with “that guy” who tells you his life story in 10 minutes, however it makes me feel good! Like a human being with the ability to interact, not just an ability but a privilege we often take for granted. What is the point of walking around blind to one another’s existence?

What’s amazing about this is that it’s actually made ME happier! It feels good to acknowledge someone and in turn the fact that at this moment we have at least one thing in common - we are in the same place, probably with similar expectations in being there but likely with an entirely different background and list of life experiences. Additionally I decided I am far too critical of people. Don’t get me wrong I do find humor in poking fun, I don’t want to come across as unrealistic, travel provides for excellent and entertaining people watching! However, instead of getting upset when on my 16th consecutive week of travel I am next to yet another large person in a middle seat who can’t even leave the arm rests down, I try to consider how uncomfortable they are and be a little more accommodating. It’s not easy, it’s much easier to complain that I am uncomfortable, and I often do, but I am trying to be more considerate and find that again it makes ME happier.

You would think that all of these actions would be unselfish, perhaps trying to contribute to society or make others feel better but in reality it makes me happier so why not do it honestly for myself? Well, if you have been fortunate enough to have a philosophical conversation with me (sarcasm intended) you also know that I am a big believer in karma, in fact if I believe in one thing in life it's karma. Therefore, in a small way I believe my efforts are doing something for others as well; perhaps my smile made them think to call their mom, spouse, friend or child just to say hi or simply lifted their spirits on a hard day where they felt all alone. Perhaps it meant nothing. But the possibility that it might of is enough for me.

As part of my travels I also enjoy the luxury (again sarcasm) of reading every Delta Sky Magazine cover to cover, at least once! This month’s issue had an interview with Deepak Chopra, someone whom I admire and often agree with, and Russell Simmons (p 72). The article discussed the importance of taking ones philosophical and spiritual beliefs into daily life; home, business, travel - all things. Why we are so compelled to compartmentalize is beyond me and I believe an unfortunate path we have taken as a society. We shouldn’t be afraid of other’s belief’s nor to voice our own, but that’s idealistic and an entirely different topic and if you’ve actually read this far I owe it to you to come to a conclusion. In this article I was struck by a couple of things the first a differentiation between happiness and pleasure. Chopra states that pleasure makes up the experiences that amount to what most people define as happiness, however it is typically gone once the experience is over. On the other hand “What brings you happiness is meaning and purpose and contribution”. I take this to mean the big picture, the long term perspective, something that is often and easily overshadowed by short term pleasure. Additionally Chopra mentions there is significant documentation to support that the fastest way to be happy is to make others happy, in a meaningful sense. In fact there are statistics to support that if your friend is happy your happiness goes up by 15%, and if they make their friend happy yours goes up by another 10% and so on. To me this means happiness is contagious! What a fantastic thing to spread; let’s make it an epidemic – seriously!

Chopra also quotes an abbot from a Buddhist monastery he recently visited in Thailand. This is it – the profound moment you all (all two of you!) have been reading for…

“You don’t have to know a lot of philosophy. Just practice the following three things: Remember the most important time in your life is now, the most important person in your life is the one you’re with now and the most important way to create the future is to act with awareness now.”

How lucky are we that we can take control, to impact one another, to literally create our life and influence others? Make eye contact, smile, say hello, don’t be afraid to interact it is one of life’s greatest gifts. Don’t waste any time, be aware now, make it happen now.

Shootin' hoops at Boondocks for Maiki's birthday - yep that's his real score, we got a balla ya'll.

Dylan's Hammer buddies gave him some perfect little Spongebob characters for his Birthday. Here he is yelling at them to smile for the picture, Ryan's attempt at getting Dyl to smile instead of give the face we normally get (seen in above pic). Instead of smiling we get yelling, but it looks like he is singing which is so funny!

I am not exaggerating that EVERYTHING is a "choo choo train" these days (proof to follow); shoes, books, dvds, condiments you name it! Everything is just a choo choo train in the making for this boy! Even the cast of Spongebob...

Honest reaction? Bad dad, it's mid-October and no way warm enough for naked sprinkler time - but I was wrong! It was 70 degrees and Ryan was not a participant, everyone is happy, especially the neighbors.

Ryan sent me this with "look how hard his eyebrows are working" because he did not want to fall asleep and was fighting so hard!

This moment? So precious! These are the ones that tug my heart strings, especially when I am away. A Dilly cuddle with a show? It doesn't get any better.

Halloween Half ... Scarrryyy

So this year we had the GENIUS idea that we would run a race early Saturday morning...
The Halloween Half starts at the top of the canyon above Sundance and ends in Orem. It sounds like so much fun to get up at 430AM, dress up and run a race that drops over 2,000ft in elevation, right? Well my body says otherwise! While we did have fun getting up there and we were feeling good (unfortunately we didn't have the time to work on costumes!) the race it's self was challenging and really hard on the body!

Ryan did amazing, of course! We have come to expect nothing less with his running. He finished in 1h 37m, that's an average pace of 7:40 - are you kidding me!?! I am seriously impressed.

I, on the other hand, have decided to look a bit differently at this race...I ran a fantastic 10K with a very long, painful cool down. I was actually pacing around 9:30 until near mile 7 where I tripped, and fell, and hit my knee, hard. This made the last 7 miles GRUELLING and PAINFULLY slow. BUT on the bright side I finished and knocked 17 minutes off of my Moab time from last year.

That being said we are both in a lot of pain, even today, I don't think that EVERY muscle in my body has ever hurt at the same time. It's an entirely new experience and not one I would call pleasant. Not to mention we were pretty pooped for Halloween festivities that night.

But we had a lot of fun and enjoyed running our first race together.
It was a beautiful course on the perfect fall morning!
Fortunately for you I had time to take pictures while trying to distract myself from the pain...

Thanks to Chris & Annie for hosting another great Halloween party! My flight was late so we were pretty late to the party, I think we made up for it with our entrance -- and by "our" I mostly mean Ryan's, as you can see...

I have named this night the "Case of the Scooby mix-up"

Despite the look on his face Dylan loved being Scooby Doo - he even learned the song. I'll get the video on here soon.

Ryan/Daphne was so uncomfortable! He didn't know how to sit and pretty much felt naked the whole night, he is not accustomed to the freedom and breeziness of a sexy little skirt. I hope he didn't get TOO used to it??
We were all laughing so hard that it was difficult to get a good picture, Ryan was talking and laughing in every single one of them!

Halloween night was chilly, wet and beautiful!

Our universe is back in alignment as I am Daphne and Ryan Shaggy for Halloween night.

We didn't take Dylan trick-or-treating for too long, he actually loved being home and answering the door for the kids. He would open the door with a friendly wave and "hi", tell them all thank you, goodbye and then be quite upset that they hadn't stayed longer. This happened EVERY time! It was so cute, he just wanted them to stay and play, can you blame him?

Our second Halloween party this year was with Adam & Jade and their friends for a Cowboy Murder Mystery dinner:
The Good, The Bad and The Guilty.

Ryan was very dedicated to his character, growing out his cowboy-stash for almost an entire week prior to the party - it must have been exhausting! Especially since whenever we were with other people I made him explain why he had it (he didn't actually shave it that way until the day before). But as you can see by his "heart-throb" pics below it was worth it, he fit the part perfectly.

Elias Truist-Heath (He lies through his teeth - clever right?!) -- is the dazzling personification of the heart-throb gunfighter, performing fancy skills with his weapons. The best brawler in the West Elias has returned to his Roadkill home after a distinguished stint in the US Cavalry. The women who adore him are elated to have him back.

I may not have been quite as dedicated to my part since I am very much a fair skinned blondey, but I think my accent and occasional Spanish terms made up for what I lacked in appearance!

Dee Adela Muerte (Day of the Dead) -- Is a Mexican beauty of pious spirit, plagued by bad luck. As a newly-wed she was thrice widowed. Her first husband was a politician, her second a minister and her third an undertaker. She now gives the Sunday sermon herself and is the busy town undertaker. Adela grieves for her lost loves under a heavy black veil.

We loved visiting Wheeler Farm with Dylan. He caught on to the corn maze very quickly, loved naming all the animals on the hay ride and was persistent in his efforts to pick up only the heaviest "punkins".

Moving. Is. Hard.

I cannot believe what a crazy time we have had moving our home! I am usually organized and efficient but this entire process was out of control. I blame it partially on a crazy work/travel schedule, partially on this being our first move of this magnitude and partially on my own laziness! We closed this week and moved into a nice little place in Kaysville. It took some work to get it ready but it's going to be perfect for the next while. I painted the bedrooms and office and as we started hanging our curtains, pictures, etc. it really started to feel like home. Of course this was before we moved all of our junk - I cannot believe how much stuff we have despite my efforts to downsize before the move. Regardless we are settling in and Dylan is loving the new pad, of course it came with a full swing set and he got a new train set so the adjustment appears to be a positive one!

Dylan has the most adorable cousins who unfortunately live WAY TOO far away! But they are so good to him (and have an awesome mom!) and made him personalized cards, mailed individually, from Latvia, absolutely oozing with love! Last month Ryan accomplished an incredibly difficult race to the top, literally the top, of the mountain in Kaysville. There's this little race called the Bairgutsman, little in the sense that you can't find much information about it and what you do find is very ambiguous. Well, at the suggestion of his "friend" Scott he decided to sign up...kind of, he was talking about it for months before I just went in and committed him by registration!

Essentially this race goes from Fruit Heights FIVE+ MILES STRAIGHT UP THE MOUNTAIN - a 5,000 foot climb - to the radar towers on top, it's then finished with a mere 5+ miles along the top to the finish line before you hitchhike down Farmington Canyon. Hence the title of this post "What was he thinking?" Well, what I was thinking is let's take out more life insurance! But of course he made it and in great time (2h57m, 20th place!! I know, he rocked it!) with minimal thrashing of this legs from the brush - this is definitely not a groomed trail.

Thanks for taking a couple of breaks to share with those of us mere mortals who were sleeping and missed this breathtaking morning view!

Dilly Doo is two two TWO!

It's hard to believe that it's already been two years since our little Dilly was born! It's amazing to me how at each stage I have thought how much fun he is and how "this is my favorite" but then the next moment it changes and I fall love all over again!

He is so much fun right now and FULL of his own opinions. He is into cars, trains, animals, books, counting, colors, coloring, Mickey Mouse and most of all Spongebob AKA "Bob-bob". He is always talking and if you listen carefully he is very clear as to what he wants, his persistence pretty much ensures you will figure it out! Fortunately while he is learning to be more demanding he is also learning to use his manners. He is very gracious and will nearly always say "Thank You", "Sorry" and "Please". We are still working on "You're Welcome" and "Excuse Me". He is also very excited to learn about everything in the world around him! As we drive he will say "Mama, Mama, Mama... (until acknowledged) ... Choo-choo-train" or "Car". He is also noticing what is on signs, like "Lala" (Elephant) "Cow", "Pig", "Didi" (dinosaur) etc. and then tell you what they say. I could go on and on but kind of feel like I have already!!

We love you Dylan and the enthusiasm you bring to our otherwise dull lives!

Yes we are as tired as we look ~ We had just returned from an exhausting (meaning lots-o-fun and very little sleep!) trip to NYC!

We had a few fun games for the "kids" including jello aquariums, decorating the treasure chests that they hunted for and taking down the Spongebob pinata!

We got him this fun playhouse "Dylan's house" where he visits daily. He also got lots of Spongebob paraphanalia which he loves, playdough, a dr. set, outdoor toys, puzzles, books, clothes, pool toys, a hand-painted bathroom stool, tent, a slide to match the house, and on and on...Did I mention he is spoiled?!?

June 5th I lined up with the rest of the girls to start the quarter mile swim in Salem "pond" - wow.hard! I have done it in the pool but this was an entirely new challenge. Physically the wetsuit made it more difficult and mentally I struggled for various reasons, the first being that I couldn't see in the water and second that I couldn't move the same way in my wetsuit. It really threw me off! BUT I made it and started the bike somewhat depleted only to be quickly rejuvenated by the incredible playlist Abi so thoughtfully created for me - THANK YOU! The bike went pretty quick although I can't wait to have a road bike next time. Of course the run was tough, let's face it a run is tough for me without the previous two events already draining me. Of course I probably wouldn't be blogging this if I didn't complete it and in 13 min less than I had really hoped for no less! I am so happy about it and more than anything can't wait for the next one where I won't have the fear of the transition logistics and can really focus on the time of my events.

Thanks for all the support from my fellow competitors Whitney, Colter (TOOK THIRD!!) and Abi, and my awesome husband, mom and sister! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

Who is this boy??

Dylan is changing so much lately! He is feisty and opinionated yet so sweet and a total comedian.

For example the other day we were trying to get him to say our friend Abi's name and he kept saying "Tisti" which is his aunt Kristi. We asked him 4 or 5 times and the last time he said "not Tisti" with this silly look on his face that said he knew he was teasing us! So funny!! Extra funny because afterward he said Abi just to show us he was playing the entire time.

He LOVES being outside and now that he is putting sentences together they frequently have to do with going outside. This sequence is so funny to me... he decided to eat the sand and you can see the progression of his face as he tries to get it out using his sandy hands. Keep in mind I am just documenting the whole process, no help from mom! I love his content look at the end.

As for the feisty? The following picture says it all!! I get this look, yell and point a couple dozen times a day and was overjoyed when I captured it in this shot. It sums up perfectly the new side to our sweet little Dilly's personality!

If there is one thing Dylan loves to do regardless of his mood it is to dance! We had music on outside and he was just spinning on the deck. Honestly he can be dead tired and will still be wiggling his hips or nodding his head. In fact we were on our way to my race at 530 in the morning and I thought he was asleep in his carseat and look back to see his eyes peeking above the blanket and he is just rocking out to the music. Even I wasn't dancing that time of day!

This week we had a full on Dylan-day-o-torture! Dr, shots and a haircut! What was I thinking? Thank goodness for suckers this kid (and his poor teeth) had three on that fateful day...

We did survive it though and the outcome is an adorable little boy - where is my baby?? I know the haircut had to be done and it looks so cute but he looks so different and grown up!!

And I do mean feast, we ate SO much and can wholeheartedly recommend; Grilled Scallops on Spinach, Smoked Salmon & Crab Rolls, Baked Brie Salad, Red Wine Braised Short Ribs, Steak Special and Chocolate Chunk Brownie with homemade Chocolate Habenaro Ice Cream... Last weekend I ran the Salt Lake 5K with my neighbor and SIL Kristi. Thanks to all the support at the finish line, mostly Abi since Ryan didn't even see me cross - his excuse? "I thought you would be at least 5 more minutes" ... hmmm sucks when his excuse is actually a compliment that I did well! WHICH I DID! I am not a person who 'loves' running or ever really focuses on improving my time but I did have a goal of running the entire time and getting somewhere in the 12 min. mile, I know SO SLOOOOW but I have been running about 13 min. miles at home so would be happy with anything faster than that...and I AM HAPPY because I did it in 10:59 miles! So now I have a time and will improve on it for the next race which happens to be for this fine lady and her family on May 8th http://trudeestribe.blogspot.com/.
This guy also ran his personal best completing the half marathon in just 1h 28 min, yep that's 6:40 miles for 13 miles - AMAZING!

Easter by the Pool

We were lucky enough to spend Easter by the pool in nice, warm Phoenix. Poor Dyl had been sick the week before so I am glad he was feeling well enough for us to make the trip and have a great time. Thanks to the Hammer's and their family for the invite it was a much needed recharge and we absolutely love spending time with you! You can see that we really did one thing this entire weekend - play outside!!! There was lots of pool and trampoline time, I love how much Dylan loves these kids and they love him it makes my heart sing!

Whatever they are talking about in the first picture is really making Dylan say "oh my goodness" in the second!

Pladdohg performed for St. Patricks day and it looks like Dylan has chosen his preferred instrument... he was really going at it and making sure he hit ALL of them. It was awe.awholelot!

Not-so-little Hadlee Dru turned FIVE - what? She is so much fun for all of us and I love what a help she is with the babies. Dylan has an adorable crush on her and follows her everywhere! Thanks for being such a fun part of our lives Hads!

Dylan ~ 18 Months

It's amazing to me to watch Dylan run around, play, sing songs and rattle on in complete sentences even though I only catch a few random words - some days it really hits me that he's a little boy, no more baby Dyl. Lucky for me he is still a sweetie pie and will cuddle and "kee" (squeeze) he isn't rejecting me...yet...He loves to talk! His new words are up, down, open, on (all used to be lumped into a simple "go"), numma (food), shoe, noh (phone), bye-bye (he uses it ever so nicely when he wants YOU to go), he knows a lot of animals sounds owl, cow, bunny (tries to wiggle his nose - so cute!), duck, elephant, seal, dog (still calls them all Sasha), kitty, tiger, bear, loves to make car sounds, give fives and pound (the theatre kids taught him this, he even grunts when he does it!) . He is getting opinionated about what he eats and drinks - fun! He loves to sing songs including "You Don't Know Me" by Ben Folds it sounds something like "me, me, me, me" and "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga which is more like "gagagagagaga". He will also act out some of "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Pat A Cake" and as soon as he hears Micky Mouse Clubhouse he starts singing "Hot Dog". I could go on and on... I kind of already did! But for now we will leave it at that - happy 18 months little one!

We love cheesy decor and this place was ooooozing with it!

As you can see by our fancy-schmancy Valentines dinner decor. We thought it appropriate that we only use things we found in the home, can you say romance??

Ryan & Colter made us this delicious dinner - well more Ryan than Colter, he needed a nap but that was for us too we didn't want a sleepy, cranky Colter and someone had to put the kiddos to sleep! It was delicious thanks babe.
